The fees involved in a family law matter are dependent upon the amount of work required. We take an initial retainer, which is based upon the level of complexity anticipated from our initial consultation. Typically, our retainer rates fall between $3,500.00 and $10,000.00. We bill hourly out of that retainer. When we run out of retainer funds, another retainer is required for continued work on the case. If the case resolves with retainer funds remaining, those funds are refunded back to the client. We send monthly invoices to clients so that there is transparency on all billing and expenses incurred. We also have case management software that allows us to provide clients with their real-time billing at any time. The easiest cases, which involve very limited issues, can resolve for $2,500.00 or less. The more complex contested child custody litigation, high asset divorce cases and divorce cases involving a spouse who owns one or more businesses, can cost $50,000 to $80,000.00 or even more. The most expensive cases we handle are modification cases. This goes to show how important it is to get your first order done right with the help of good legal counsel. In most cases we seek reimbursment of attorney’s fees from the opposing party. We are very frequently awarded fees for our clients. We will give you a better estimate of the total cost at our initial consultation.
